During June 9-10, 2010, IES organized the 29th CASS Forum on International Studies in Huairou, Beijing. The theme of the forum was the Lisbon Treaty and the future of Europe.  The forty participants came from the academic institutions and universities based in Beijing.

Scholars agreed that, as a milestone in the long process of European integration, the Lisbon Treaty would push one major step upward for the EU in all areas. However, as some the clauses are ambivalent and complicated, implementation itself tends to pose grave challenges for the member states.

Some participants argued that the Lisbon Treaty would provide China and EU with a good opportunity to further develop their bilateral relations.

At the forum, scholars also discussed such issues as the legal conditions of possibly bailing out Greece from its debt crisis, “elite politics”, the model of social market economy, democratic deficit, common security, etc.

At the forum the Chinese edition of the Lisbon Treaty, translated by Cheng Weidong and Li Jinkun, was inaugurated.
