The Institute of European Studies (IES) at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) was established in May 1981. Before 1994 it was called the Institute of Western European Studies.

A national institution with 56 researchers and staffs, IES undertakes academic researches on European politics, economic development, international relations, law, social and cultural issues, etc.

IES consists of five research departments, i.e., Department of Economic Studies, Department of Legal Studies, Department of Social and Cultural Studies, Department of Politics, and Department of International Relations.

IES publishes a bimonthly in the name of Ouzhou Yanjiu  (Chinese Journal of European Studies). It is the only national journal devoted to European studies in China. In addition, IES has been publishing working papers (in both Chinese and English) and a yearly blue book titled Ouzhou Fazhan Baogao (European Development Report).

The Chinese Association for European Studies (CAES) is under the auspices of IES.  It is the only national association of European studies. 

The Department of European Studies at the CASS Graduate School is affiliated with IES. It offers both Ph.D. and M.A. degrees on European studies.
