EU-China European Studies Centres Programme is a cooperation initiative between China and the EU, which aims to strengthen the academic cooperation between Chinese and European institutions, and enhance the Chinese understanding of the EU and European affairs. As a major grantee, the IES undertook studies on“European Model and Its Impact on the World” through 2005-2007 with supports provided by its European partners, mainly as Mannheim Centre for European Studies/Mannheim University (Germany), Freiburg University (Germany) and Centre National des Recherches Scientifiques (France), Maastricht University, etc.
Specifically, this project unfolded around the following themes—
▪ The Political Integration and multilateral mechanisms in the region;
▪ European Identity and culture diversity;
▪ EU economic and social model;
▪ The EU Legislations ensuring effective operation of the rest European Models
Out of the project there are four monographs that have been or to be produced as Economic and Social Model of the European Union; EU Legal System and Market Economic Model; European Governance and Contemporary International Relations; and Europe with Cultural Diversity. They were based on contributions from the project participants to the project-based international conferences, workshops and seminars hosted by the IES—

The IES also takes the opportunity provided by the ESCP to perform its public service function to meet the increasing demands of knowing and better understanding Europe. For instance, it took ways of hosting “China-Europe Forum ”to gather scholars from China, Europe and US to address interests and uncertainties among these partner societies in face to upcoming challenges such as“Globalization as a new strategic environment”, ”Economic, political and security challenges facing EU, US and China”, “Responsible stakeholders”,“New norms and values for a common future”etc. The event witnessed good audience from governments and the public. During the project implementation, the IES also reached agreements with Chinese education institutions, such as Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Tsing Hua University, Peking University, Beijing Normal University and China Foreign Affairs University, on opening MA courses on ‘European integration’ and delivering the IES faculty to lecture on ‘European Model’ in these schools.
